Something different

Child sexual abuse is a horrid abuse of power. What we generally do as a society "about" this crime is fear it, abhor it, pity it’s victims, and reject the perpetrator. Repeat.

But here’s someone who’s doing something different about it:

Maya’s puppets help children to talk when they need to talk.

As a child who grew up around folkart, Maya teaches the children how to explain their own worlds through the safe communication medium of art. How necessary this is for all children – to think, to build, to have agency, much more so for children who may feel their voice and their feelings have been silenced.

And within this work, how little judgment there is, of anyone. Simply expression, that needs to happen in order to restore health.
If you read more about Maya, I think you'll also see that she is a great example of someone taking their background, their roots, the best of them, and giving back to the world in a wonderfully unique way. She is a great reminder that we should not try to impress anyone, or mimic another's path to success. We are our own best versions of ourselves, and we all have something different to give.

He himself was not the light

He came only as a witness to the light.

My opinion

This statement is not an opinion. This statement is a fact. This article title is one of many, many, many examples of how men and women are not treated with equity in the world, and why feminism may be more important now than it ever has been.

NObody hates Rudolph...

See?

...not even my favorite musical sharer of 67% of my initials.

He should make a Christmas album. That I would listen to!

Advent

The Advent season is upon us!

I go through cycles of loving and immensely disliking the more popular aspects of the holiday season, and this year I am solidly in the disdain category.

I don't want to shop, I don't want to listen to Christmas carols on the radio and I really don't want to hear people complaining about the nuisances of this time of year (like. I. suppose. I. now. am.).

But what I do really like about this time of year is Advent, the preparation of our hearts for the coming of God, salvation, a spirit of unity and goodness, or whatever is it that we each find to be worthy of our anticipation.

Like the Lenten season, the Advent season is an exciting period of peaked generosity, gentleness, and for me, the ability to grow closer in heart to Who it is that I believe is our shared Creator. It remains a magical time in this way, and I find that I am taking most seriously the call of that Creator to love bravely, recklessly, and from a place of truth.

While my outside behavior might seem minimally changed during this time, my motivations are leading me more toward patience, kindness, temperance and understanding as I lean into knowing God, in the moment, each day of December.

I hope the season is filling you with lots of light!

If you would like to follow along with some short Advent readings during this journey to Christmas, please check these out: http://www.chapelofthecross.com/advent

PS - None of my disdain applies to Rudolph, ever. He always has my heart.

Wintertime

It's time for snow, blankets, twinkling lights, short days, and long nights.

It's time for dreaming, and keeping warm, keeping working and keeping going.

It's time to appreciate the seasons inherent to life.

It's time to laugh, time to be silent, and time to take stock.

I will find you down the road

For the journey:

"Oh Lover, hold on
'till I come back again
For these arms are growin' tired,
And my tales are wearing thin

If you're patient I will surprise,
When you wake up I'll have come

All the anger will settle down
And we'll go do all the things we should have done

Yes I remember what we said
As we lay down to bed
I'll be here if you will only come back home

Oh Lover, I'm lost
Because the road I've chosen beckens me away

Oh Lover, don't you rome
Now I'm fighting words I never thought I'd say

But I remember what we said
As we lay down to bed
I'll forgive you oh
If you just come back home

Hmmm mmmm
Hmmmm mmmm

Oh Lover, I'm old
You'll be out there and be thinking just of me

And I will find you down the road
And will return back home to where we're meant to be

'cause I remember what we said
As we lay down to bed
We'll be back soon as we make history."
